"I think a lot of people saw me as almost a certainty .” he said in a recent interview. “But if you look at the last squad, it was almost all top-eight bar Caulker . I think that says a lot about the selection. I don't think it really matters how well you are playing - it's who you play for.”
Johnson’s comments will not do him any favours in being selected for the trip to Brazil, despite his good run of form this season. England currently have a wealth of wingers who are arguably more effective than Johnson, which could, in fact, explain Hodgson’s decision.
In any case, after these unnecessary comments, Johnson shouldn’t be expecting a phone call from the England coach any time soon.
