England Manager Roy Hodgson Accused of Showing Favouritism to Bigger Clubs
Does Roy Hodgson Show Favouritism to Players From Bigger Clubs?
England Manager Roy Hodgson has been criticised recently for his apparent favouritism when selecting his England team. Critics accuse him of opting for players from more successful clubs - even if there are better players available from “smaller” teams.
However, Hodgson’s team selection during the match against Denmark earlier this month shows that these claims are wide of the mark.
With Cardiff City defender Steven Caulker, Everton midfielder Ross Barkley and Southampton trio Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana and Jay Rodriguez all being picked by Hodgson, the claim that he favours players from bigger clubs is one that has no basis.
Adam Johnson Comments on Hodgson's Team Selection
Despite this, 26-year-old Sunderland winger Adam Johnson seems to think that Roy Hodgson has a personal vendetta against him. He has accused the England coach of favouritism to justify his absence from the England squad.
"I think a lot of people saw me as almost a certainty .” he said in a recent interview. “But if you look at the last squad, it was almost all top-eight bar Caulker . I think that says a lot about the selection. I don't think it really matters how well you are playing - it's who you play for.”
Johnson’s comments will not do him any favours in being selected for the trip to Brazil, despite his good run of form this season. England currently have a wealth of wingers who are arguably more effective than Johnson, which could, in fact, explain Hodgson’s decision.
In any case, after these unnecessary comments, Johnson shouldn’t be expecting a phone call from the England coach any time soon.
